The story
About Seymour
Seymour began as Newell's Station, a frontier fort built by pioneer Samuel Newell in 1783. The first court of Sevier County, in the short lived State of Franklin, met there in March 1785. In the 1800s the crossroads was known as Trundles Crossroads, where the main road from Sevierville split toward Knoxville and the west.
After the Knoxville, Sevierville and Eastern Railway opened on December 18, 1909, the station was named Seymour for the line's chief engineer, Charles Seymour, and the post office took the name soon after.
Seymour is not a city. Residents have met several times to talk about incorporating, and most have said no, mainly because they worried about higher taxes and more government. More than 14,000 people lived in the Seymour area in 2020.
