The story
About Gatlinburg
For centuries Cherokee hunters used the Indian Gap Trail to reach the game in the Smokies. The first settler who meant to stay was William Ogle, who cut and notched logs here around the turn of the 1800s but died of malaria before he could bring his family. His widow, Martha Huskey Ogle, made the trip over the mountain around 1806 and found the logs waiting. The cabin they built still stands near the center of town.
The early settlers called the place White Oak Flats. In 1856 a post office opened in the general store of Radford Gatlin, and the town took his name. Gatlin sided with the Confederacy and argued with his neighbors, who mostly backed the Union, and he was forced out in 1859.
Gatlinburg sits on the edge of Great Smoky Mountains National Park along US 441, about 39 miles southeast of Knoxville. About 3,600 people lived here at the 2020 census, and it is one of the best known mountain resort towns in the country.
