The story

About Sevierville

Sevierville sits where the West Fork meets the Little Pigeon River. Native peoples lived here long before settlers came, and the McMahan Mound was a village site there between 1200 and 1500 A.D. Isaac Thomas built a farm, trading post and tavern at the forks in 1783, and a community called Forks of the Little Pigeon grew up around him.

When Sevier County was created in 1794, the settlement was chosen as the county seat and renamed Sevierville. James McMahan donated land for the courthouse and the town grew up around it. Fires took the courthouse more than once, and the one standing today dates to 1895 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Sevierville is the hometown of Dolly Parton, who was born here in 1946. The town put a statue of her on the courthouse lawn and named Dolly Parton Parkway after her.
