Claiborne County was established in 1801 and named for William Claiborne, an early Tennessee judge and congressman. It sits at the northeast edge of the state, where a mountain pass called Cumberland Gap opened the way west. Dr. Thomas Walker made the pass known in 1750, and long hunters and settlers followed it through the Clinch and Powell valleys.
Tazewell is the county seat. Harrogate is the largest city and home to Lincoln Memorial University. Cumberland Gap is a small historic town inside Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, and Arthur, Speedwell and New Tazewell are quiet places surrounded by hills, farms and Norris Lake shoreline.
