The story

About Pittman Center

Pittman Center sits in Emert's Cove, a broad valley on the Middle Fork of the Little Pigeon River, about eight miles east of Gatlinburg. It was Cherokee hunting ground until the Treaty of Dumplin Creek in 1785. Frederick Emert, a Revolutionary War veteran born in Pennsylvania to German parents, settled here sometime between 1785 and 1793. The town built the Emert's Cove Covered Bridge in his honor in 2000.

The name comes from the Pittman Community Center. In 1920 Dr. John Burnett, a Methodist minister, started a school here for children who had little chance at an education, and Reverend Eli Pittman of New York helped him raise the first money. Only about 450 people lived in town at the 2020 census, and its story is tied closely to the national park next door.
