The story

About Sevier County

Sevier County was formed in 1794 from part of Jefferson County and has kept its original boundaries ever since. It is named for John Sevier, the first governor of Tennessee. Sevierville has been the county seat since 1795, and it is the eighth oldest city in the state.

For most of its early life this was a farming county, and a quiet one. That changed in the early 1930s when the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was created. About thirty percent of the park lies inside Sevier County, and tourism has carried the local economy ever since.

Sevier County also holds the highest point in Tennessee. Kuwohi, which used to be called Clingmans Dome, rises 6,643 feet on the line with North Carolina. The county is about 598 square miles, with the Smokies to the south and Ridge and Valley farmland to the north.
