The story
About Pigeon Forge
The name comes from an iron forge built by Isaac Love around 1820 on the Little Pigeon River, near what became the Old Mill. The river itself was named for the huge flocks of passenger pigeons that once gathered along its banks. For centuries before that, the Cherokee hunted in this valley and followed a footpath called Indian Gap Trail over the Smokies. US 441 runs close to that old route today.
Settlers came after the Treaty of Dumplin Creek in 1785. Colonel Samuel Wear, a Revolutionary War veteran, built a stockade in 1792 near the spot that is now Pigeon Forge City Park, and it gave early pioneers a safe place to stop. Robert Shields built a fort along Middle Creek, near where Dollywood stands now.
Today Pigeon Forge sits about five miles north of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and draws visitors for Dollywood, Dollywood's Splash Country, music theaters and shopping. About 6,300 people lived here at the 2020 census.
