The story
About Powell
Powell likes to think of itself as an independent small town more than a suburb, and its history backs that up. Settlers came through in 1789, two years before Knoxville was established, including Stockley Donelson, a brother in law of Andrew Jackson. His home, now called the Alexander Bishop House, still stands on Bishop Lane. John Manifee, a Revolutionary War veteran, built a small fort and trading post along what is now Clinton Highway in the late 1780s.
The community was first called Powell Station, after a train stop named for local resident Columbus Powell. The station is no longer in use but is still in the downtown area. Powell is unincorporated, with about 13,800 people at the 2020 census.
