The story

About Tazewell

In 1750 Dr. Thomas Walker of Virginia made the location of Cumberland Gap known, and long hunters began coming down the Clinch and Powell valleys into what is now Claiborne County. The land was hunting ground for the Cherokee and Shawnee, and early settlers built small forts and stations for protection. Fort Butler stood just west of modern Tazewell.

One of the first settlers was John Hunt, a militia captain who later helped found Huntsville, Alabama. In 1804, three years after the county was created, Tazewell became the county seat, partly thanks to Hunt's influence. The town is named for Tazewell, Virginia, which was named for Virginia Senator Henry Tazewell. About 2,300 people lived here at the 2020 census.
