The story

About Cumberland Gap

The town is named for the Cumberland Gap, the mountain pass that has been a gateway through the mountains for centuries. The Cherokee and Shawnee traveled a game trail through it, known to the Shawnee as Athiamiowee and called the Warriors' Path by settlers. Thomas Walker is credited with finding the pass, working for the Loyal Land Company to look for a place to settle west of the mountains.

It became a postal town in 1803 and was incorporated as a city in 1907. The town changed hands four times in the Civil War, but no battles were fought there. Most of downtown is on the National Register of Historic Places. About 300 people live here, inside the boundaries of Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.
