The story
About Arthur
Arthur is named for Alexander A. Arthur, a land developer who moved here in 1870 from Montreal and laid out a town. In 1876 the area was called Butcher Springs, and when a post office opened the town became known as Arthur in 1890. Arthur was also key in bringing a railroad from Knoxville to Middlesboro, Kentucky through the town, and it grew as a railroad town shipping coal, ore and other minerals.
In 1901 the town had a school, Wester College, run by Dan Wester, that taught all grades. It burned in the 1910s. Arthur is an unincorporated community on State Route 63, southwest of Harrogate, with the ZIP code 37707.
