The story

About Claiborne County

Claiborne County was established on October 29, 1801, from parts of Grainger and Hawkins counties. It was named for William C. C. Claiborne, one of the first judges of the Tennessee Superior Court and one of the state's first members of Congress. Tazewell is the county seat and Harrogate is the largest city.

In June 1861 the county voted against secession 1,243 to 250. In 1892 an English land company led locally by businessman Alexander Arthur built the Four Seasons Hotel on the site of present day Lincoln Memorial University. Its promoters called it the largest hotel in the United States, with about 700 rooms. It never made money and was torn down in 1895.
