The story

About Townsend

Townsend sits in Tuckaleechee Cove on the Little River. People have lived in the cove for thousands of years, and the oldest finds date back to about 2000 B.C. By 1200 A.D. a fortified native village stood near the north end of the cove, and the Cherokee arrived around 1600 and built small villages along the river. The name Tuckaleechee comes from the Cherokee word Tikwalitsi, and its original meaning is not known.

The city was chartered in 1921 by people tied to the Little River Railroad and Lumber Company. Today it is known as the Peaceful Side of the Smokies, one of three gateways to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, with about 550 residents and several museums about the natural and human history of the mountains.
