The story
About Rockford
Rockford takes its name from a ford on the Little River that early 1800s settlers and merchants used when they traveled between Knoxville and the Blount County seat. The ford was unusually rocky, which travelers preferred because silt and sand made much of the river hard to cross. By the early 1800s the community was called Rocky Ford.
Since the 1900s the town has been home to the Rockford Manufacturing Company, a cordage factory. Residents incorporated Rockford as a city in the early 1970s so that it would not be swallowed up by the fast growing cities around it. About 800 people lived here at the 2020 census.
