The story

About Friendsville

Friendsville was founded by Quakers from New Garden, North Carolina, who settled here in the 1790s. The town still has a Friends Meetinghouse. In 1854 a group of British Quaker elders stayed here while speaking for the abolitionist cause, and one of them, William Forster, died during the visit and is buried here.

In the 1800s the Quakers had great influence in Blount County and helped build the antislavery movement before the Civil War. Along with nearby Greenback and possibly Cades Cove, Friendsville was a stop on the Underground Railroad. About 900 people live here today.
