The story

About Rocky Top

Rocky Top began as Coal Creek, founded in the early 1800s after the 1798 Treaty of Tellico opened the area to settlement, and named for the stream that runs through town. In 1891 coal miners were locked out here and in nearby Briceville, and the state militia occupied the town for over a year in what became known as the Coal Creek War. The miners were protesting the use of unpaid convict labor in the mines, and they won when Tennessee ended the program. The Fraterville Mine disaster of 1902 happened nearby.

The town took the name Lake City in 1936 after Norris Dam created Norris Lake. On June 26, 2014, it officially became Rocky Top, named for the famous song. About 1,600 people live here, most of them in Anderson County.
