The story
About Norris
Norris was built in 1933 by the Tennessee Valley Authority as a model planned community for the workers building Norris Dam on the Clinch River. It is named for Senator George W. Norris of Nebraska, a long time supporter of TVA.
TVA chairman Arthur Morgan wanted a model of cooperative living. Staff loosely followed the English garden city idea of the 1890s, with winding roads that follow the land, a central common green and a belt of countryside left for residents. The houses were some of the first all electric homes, built from local wood and stone in twelve basic designs, each with a porch and a fireplace.
Norris was the first town in Tennessee with a full dial telephone system, and its creamery was the first milk plant in the world run entirely on electricity. About 1,600 people live here today.
