The story

About Anderson County

Anderson County was carved out of Grainger and Knox counties in 1801, the same year as its neighbor Roane County, so the two are often called sister counties. It was named for Joseph Anderson, a U.S. senator from Tennessee at the time who had also served as a judge in the Southwest Territory.

Before that it was Cherokee land, and several pioneer families, among them the Wallace, Gibbs, Freels, Frost and Tunnell families, settled here. The Treaty of Holston in 1791 was meant to keep settlers out, but people kept coming through the mountains from Virginia and North Carolina. Skirmishes followed, and they eased after the Treaty of Tellico in 1798 opened more land for settlement.

Clinton is the county seat. In later years the county became known far beyond East Tennessee because of Oak Ridge.
