The story

About Oliver Springs

Oliver Springs was founded in 1821 as Winter's Gap, named for Major Moses Winters, its first permanent European settler. Native Americans had used the area as a hunting ground and campsite long before. The mineral springs on Windrock Mountain, which the Cherokee called Tah-hah-lehaha, or healing waters, kept their reputation for medicinal powers into the 1900s.

Settlement did not begin in earnest until the 1790s and growth stayed slow. In 1826 Richard Oliver became the town's first postmaster, and the town was renamed in his honor.

The town reaches into Anderson, Morgan and Roane counties, and about 3,300 people lived here at the 2020 census.
