The story

About Newport

The Great Indian Warpath crossed the Pigeon River here at a shallow spot early traders called War Ford. In August 1782, in one of the last fights of the Revolution, Colonel John Sevier crossed the Pigeon at that ford and attacked a Cherokee camp. After the war settlers moved in around the river fords. Peter Fine ran a ferry on the French Broad in the early 1780s, and John Gilliland settled across from it, in what is now Oldtown.

Sometime in the 1790s the Gilliland family gave 50 acres for a town square and courthouse on the riverbank, and the town of New Port began. For years the settlers lived under the threat of Cherokee raids from across the mountains and built forts such as Wood's Fort, McCoy's Fort and Whitson's Fort for protection. Fines Creek is named for the Fine family's loss in one of those fights.

Newport is the county seat of Cocke County and sits on the Pigeon River. About 6,900 people lived here at the 2020 census.
