The story

About Cocke County

Cocke County sits on Tennessee's eastern border. Cherokee people were probably the most recent of the native cultures that lived here for thousands of years. The first recorded European settlement was in 1783, when land near the fork of the French Broad and Pigeon rivers was cleared and farmed. Those first settlers were mostly Scots-Irish, Dutch and Germans who came over the mountains from the Carolinas or down through Virginia.

The Tennessee General Assembly formed the county on October 9, 1797, from part of Greene County, and named it for William Cocke, one of the state's first two U.S. Senators. The mountains made life hard for early farmers. In the June 1861 vote, residents turned down secession 1,185 to 518.

Newport is the county seat, and the county is part of the Knoxville, Morristown and Sevierville regional area.
