The story

About Cosby

For centuries the north rim of the Great Smokies, including Cosby, was Cherokee hunting ground. The first European settlers reached what is now Cocke County in the early 1780s. Samuel Odell was probably the first to settle in the Cosby Creek valley. Others included John Gilliland near the mouth of the Pigeon River, Peter Fine, who started Fine's Ferry at Newport, and a small colony of German immigrants from Pennsylvania in the area called Dutch Bottoms.

Cosby is an unincorporated community with about 800 people, and its name is used for the northeastern section of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which forms its southern boundary. Its ZIP code reaches into Sevier County and touches Pittman Center.
