The story
About Del Rio
A native village once stood along the French Broad River where Del Rio sits today. Frank Stokely, who lived nearby in the middle of the 1900s, collected many of the artifacts it left behind and showed them in a small museum, and the Knoxville Chapter of the Tennessee Archaeological Society dug here too.
The first settler was John Huff, a Revolutionary War veteran, hunter and trapper who got a 400 acre land grant where Long Creek meets the French Broad. He and his wife Mary Corder arrived around 1784 and built a small blockhouse, Huff's Fort, that became a stopping post for stagecoaches between Knoxville and Warm Springs, now Hot Springs, North Carolina. The community that grew up there was called Big Creek.
Del Rio is unincorporated. The ZIP code 37727 had about 2,100 people in 2000.
