The story

About Mosheim

Mosheim was first called Blue Springs, after a spring that flows through town, and was settled around 1800. Many of the first settlers were German Lutherans. In 1872 the Lutherans started a college here called Mosheim Institute, named for the German theologian Johann Lorenz von Mosheim, and the town took the same name that year.

The Civil War Battle of Blue Springs was fought near Mosheim on October 10, 1863, and the town held a reenactment every year from 1991 to 2008. Several people in the East Tennessee bridge burning plot, including the potter Alex Haun, came from a community called Pottertown just outside Mosheim. About 2,500 people lived here at the 2020 census.
