The story

About Greene County

Greene County grew out of the Nolichucky settlement, started in the early 1770s by pioneer Jacob Brown on land leased from the Cherokee. The county was formed in 1783 and named for Major General Nathanael Greene of the Continental Army. At the time the area was part of the short lived State of Franklin.

Davy Crockett was born here in 1786, near Limestone, where his father John Crockett had settled. The county is also home to Tusculum, which Wikipedia calls the oldest college in Tennessee, along with Ebenezer Methodist Church near Chuckey, the state's oldest Methodist congregation, and Elmwood Farm, its second oldest continuously cultivated farm.

Greeneville is the county seat. Like most farm families in East Tennessee, those in Greene County were mostly Unionist and opposed secession.
