The story
About Greeneville
Native Americans hunted and camped in the Nolichucky Valley as far back as the Paleo-Indian period. Permanent European settlement of Greene County began in 1772, when North Carolina merchant Jacob Brown leased land from the Cherokee. Greeneville was officially recognized as a town in 1786, and it was named for Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene. It is the second oldest town in Tennessee and the only town in the country spelled this way.
Greeneville was the capital of the short lived State of Franklin, which settlers set up in the 1780s when North Carolina gave up its western lands. It is also where Andrew Johnson, the seventeenth president, began his political career. He was a tailor who was elected alderman here, and he and his family lived in Greeneville for most of his adult life.
About 15,500 people lived in Greeneville at the 2020 census.
