The story

About Rutledge

Rutledge was established and incorporated in 1797 and named for General George Rutledge, a prominent citizen of nearby Sullivan County. It was the first town in Grainger County with its own police department. Several communities had shared the county seat since 1796, and in 1801 Rutledge became the official seat.

The town did well in the early 1800s because it sat on the Federal Road, now US 11W, which linked New Orleans and Virginia. That road met the Wilderness Road, now US 25E, at Bean Station, just east of town. In the 1820s Andrew Johnson, then a tailor in Greeneville, briefly ran a tailor shop in Rutledge, and a replica of it was put up on the courthouse grounds in 1976. About 1,300 people live in Rutledge.
