The story
About Bean Station
In 1775 Daniel Boone and William Bean looked down on the future site of Bean Station from Clinch Mountain on a hunting and surveying trip. In 1776 Bean, a captain in the Virginia militia, was awarded more than 3,000 acres in the German Creek valley and built a four room cabin that was both his family's home and an inn for settlers, fur traders and long hunters. The place was called Bean's Cabin, Bean's Crossroads and finally Bean's Station.
It is believed to be the first permanently settled European American community in what is now Tennessee. After Bean died in 1782 his sons grew the homestead into a frontier outpost. About 3,000 people live here today, mostly in Grainger County with a small piece in Hawkins County.
