The story
About LaFollette
LaFollette was started around 1890 when Harvey and Grant LaFollette bought 37,000 acres at Big Creek Gap. They formed the LaFollette Coal, Iron, and Railway Company to mine the coal and iron they had found. The company failed in the 1920s, but the community kept growing, and the city was incorporated in 1897.
On May 10, 1904, a major fire that began in the Cumberland Inn burned most of downtown, destroying a reported 31 businesses. The city rebuilt, and it is now the principal city of Campbell County.
