The story

About Jellico

Jellico sits on the Kentucky line, 58 miles by road north of Knoxville. The name is a local twist on angelica, an herb that grows plentifully in the surrounding mountains. It was first used for the mountains and for Jellico Creek, which runs about five miles west of town.

In the early 1880s a high quality vein of coal was found in the Jellico Mountains, and when the railroad arrived in 1883 mines opened all over the area. The town had been founded as Smithburg in 1878, and it took the Jellico name in 1883 to cash in on the growing fame of Jellico coal. It was incorporated on March 7, 1883. Through the 1890s and early 1900s this was among the most productive coal fields in Kentucky and Tennessee.
