The story
About Campbell County
Campbell County was formed in 1806 from parts of Anderson and Claiborne counties. It was named for Colonel Arthur Campbell, a Virginia officer in the Revolutionary War. Jacksboro is the county seat, and the county sits right on the Kentucky border.
New Mammoth Cave in Elk Valley, about ten miles southwest of Jellico, was mined for saltpeter, a main ingredient of gunpowder, during the War of 1812. It was opened to tourists in 1921. Today it is gated and protected as a sanctuary for bats, including the endangered Indiana bat.
The county was strongly for the Union. In June 1861 voters rejected secession 1,094 to 60. On August 1, 1861, Campbell County became the first in Tennessee to form a Union Army unit, Company B of the 1st Tennessee Infantry, organized at Jacksboro.
