The story

About Jefferson County

Jefferson County was established on June 11, 1792, by Governor William Blount of the Southwest Territory. Its seat, Dandridge, was settled in 1783, which makes it one of the oldest towns in the state. Today the county is part of the Morristown metropolitan area along with Grainger and Hamblen counties.

Like most mountain counties in East Tennessee, Jefferson was against secession. In the June 1861 vote, residents turned it down 1,987 to 603. A railroad bridge at Strawberry Plains was one of the targets of the bridge burning plot in November 1861, and the war split families here, with men joining both armies.

Jefferson County sits where Interstates 40 and 81 meet, and that crossroads keeps it busy. County leaders have looked at a large site north of the interchange to bring in major employers.
