The story

About Dandridge

Dandridge calls itself the second oldest town in Tennessee, behind only Jonesborough. The land has a long past. A native chiefdom called Chiaha stood on Zimmerman's Island, just southwest of town on the French Broad River, and the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto spent several weeks there in 1540. Juan Pardo built a small fort nearby in 1567. The island is now under Douglas Lake.

The first settlers arrived in 1783, and in 1793 Dandridge became the county seat of Jefferson County. It was named for Martha Dandridge Washington, wife of the first president. On December 24, 1863, a Civil War skirmish took place here between Confederate General James Longstreet and Union General Ambrose Burnside.

About 3,300 people lived in Dandridge at the 2020 census, and it is an easy drive on I-40 to Knoxville.
