The story

About Jefferson City

Jefferson City was first called Mossy Creek. Adam and Elizabeth Peck came down the Holston River from Virginia and arrived on the banks of the creek in 1788, where they built a fort, a house of worship and a gristmill. The name is thought to come from the bright green moss early settlers saw growing around the creek. By 1797 there were about 75 to 100 families within four miles.

The Battle of Mossy Creek was fought on December 19, 1863, during the Civil War, as Confederate General James Longstreet and Union General Ambrose Burnside fought over East Tennessee.

About 8,400 people lived in Jefferson City at the 2020 census.
