The story

About Russellville

Russellville was founded by George Russell in 1784. After the Battle of Bean's Station in December 1863, Confederate Lieutenant General James Longstreet set up his headquarters in the Nenney House here, and his army wintered in Russellville through 1863 and 1864. The house still stands and is now The General Longstreet Museum.

Other Civil War stories still live here. General Lafayette McLaws stayed in a house called Hayslope, originally a tavern known as the Tavern with the Red Door, and nearby Bethesda Presbyterian Church served as a hospital. Russellville sits on US 11E, about halfway between Whitesburg and Morristown.
