The story

About Hamblen County

Hamblen County was created in 1870 from parts of Jefferson, Grainger and Hawkins counties. It is named for Hezekiah Hamblen, an early settler, landowner and attorney who served for many years on the Hawkins County Court. Governor Dewitt Clinton Senter, who lived in the county, used his influence to help get it established. The courthouse was finished in 1874.

Morristown is the county seat and its only incorporated city, and it anchors the Morristown metropolitan area.

Hamblen has one claim few counties can match. In World War I it was the only county in the United States with two Medal of Honor recipients, Edward R. Talley and Calvin Ward, who both earned it on the Western Front. A Navy attack transport in World War II, the USS Hamblen, was named for the county.
