The story

About Loudon County

Loudon County was formed on May 27, 1870, from parts of Roane, Monroe and Blount counties. It started out as Christiana County, but a few days later the name was changed to honor Fort Loudoun, the British fort built near Vonore in 1756. The county court first met at the Baptist Church in Loudon, and a courthouse was finished in 1872.

The land is much older than the county. Native Americans lived on Bussell Island at the mouth of the Little Tennessee River for several thousand years, and the Overhill Cherokee village of Mialoquo stood along the river near modern Tellico Village.

One early settlement was Morganton, a river port and ferry near Greenback. It did well in the early 1800s but faded when the railroad came, and Tellico Lake covered what was left in the 1970s.
