The story

About Greenback

Greenback grew up near Morganton Ferry, first called Wear's Ferry, an important crossing of the Little Tennessee River built in the late 1700s. By 1810 the little community was called Portville, and it was chartered as Morganton in 1813 for local merchant Gideon Morgan. A road from the Tellico agent's new post at Fort Southwest Point, now Kingston, ran to the Blount County seat and crossed the river at the ferry, so it became known as Morganton Road.

Before the Civil War, a cave in the Morganton and Greenback area is believed to have been a stop on the Underground Railroad, probably thanks to ties to Blount County, which was strongly abolitionist. About 1,100 people lived in Greenback at the 2020 census.
