Oak Ridge began in 1942 when the federal government bought farmland in the Clinch River valley to build a secret city for the Manhattan Project. It is known as the Atomic City and the Secret City, and sits about 25 miles east of downtown Knoxville.
Today it has museums, miles of greenways and neighborhoods spread over wooded ridges, and a national laboratory.
