The story

About Sneedville

Sneedville is the only city in Hancock County and its county seat, with about 1,300 people at the 2020 census. Settlement began in the 1790s, after the Revolutionary War, as families moved in from the Virginia and North Carolina frontier.

Among the early settlers was a mixed group of families who became known as the Melungeons, documented as having mainly European and African ancestry. Historians still debate exactly when they first arrived, but the records show their ancestors migrating from Virginia and North Carolina in the late 1700s.
