The story
About Sharps Chapel
Sharps Chapel is an unincorporated community on the northern shore of Norris Lake in southwestern Union County. Revolutionary War veteran Henry Sharp settled here on a 700 acre land grant, and the community is named for the Sharp family. The post office was opened in 1866 as Clinch River and renamed Sharps Chapel in 1869.
In the 1930s a Civilian Conservation Corps camp here housed workers building Norris Dam and nearby Norris Dam State Park. The Bait Ousley house, a brick Federal style home built by Jacob Sharp in 1835, has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978. The ZIP code is 37866.
