The story

About Mount Carmel

Mount Carmel is in Hawkins County, which was once part of the State of Franklin. That was an independent state made up of eight counties in western North Carolina, governed by John Sevier, and it lasted about four years before it rejoined North Carolina.

The city is part of the Tri-Cities region and is next door to Church Hill and Kingsport. Its geography once drew a national news story because the town sat on only one side of the main highway. Since then the city has gained land on the other side of the road and built a cemetery.
